The famous Santa Monica Pier had been on my radar for some time. It is one of the most often displayed shots of the Los Angeles area. Any time there is a televised professional sporting event nearby, this iconic pier with the small amusement park is often part of the promotional footage of the telecast.
I waited for a clear day with an interesting sky, which we get quite regularly in the winter months. More of a bonus, was not having to make a special trip of two hours in Los Angeles traffic to get the shot, only to find a fogged in coast or other non-optimum condition. I happened to be on my way down from central California, so it was convenient stop along the way.
I took several variations of the Santa Monica Pier from this viewpoint, as the sun was setting, because I was not sure what scene was going to be the best. At approximately 5:20pm, The sky started to turn color and the entire area developed a beautiful glow. This version captures the activity level at its fullest, including the seagulls, the roller coaster, and the people lining the pier while enjoying all of the activities it has to offer.
The night shot is spectacular for the lighting while this version captures the activity level at its fullest, including the seagulls, the roller coaster, and the people lining the pier while enjoying all of the activities it has to offer.
